An Art-Curated Celebration of Cultural Cuisines

An Art-Curated Celebration of Cultural Cuisines

Reflective surfaces, refined embellishments, and cultural portraits nod to Gulshan’s new Art Deco fine-dining venue, designed as an intimate haven for Dhaka city residents. Concurrently convivial and experiential, the interiors of Baan Busaba are reminiscent of an East Asian epicurean dining experience that is evolving gracefully over time.

Inaugurated in early August 2025, the new restaurant almost resembling a curated gallery of art and culture is located on the second floor of Hamid Tower in Gulshan 2 Circle. The owners and partners behind this restaurant are Sadman Hossain, Mofrat Hassan, and Razin Afsar.

The realization of the refined space required precise coordination between traditional styling and complex modern installations.

An Art-Curated Celebration of Cultural Cuisines

One of the owners, Mofrat Hassan, notes the challenges, saying: “The complexity wasn’t in the concept, but in the finish—integrating genuine cultural materials with delicate East Asian art and cuisine, all on the second floor of a high-rise where the city views could not be properly ensured. We focused mostly on creating an internal experience. Every reflective surface had to align perfectly; it felt less like construction and more like an ornamental curation.”

The concept for the project was driven by the idea of a space that felt “precious, like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.”

The elevators open to a dimly lit, well-decorated reception area that sets the tone for the fine-dining experience.

Guests enter along a corridor where muted teal upholstery introduces a sophisticated, saturated color palette, suggesting a move toward a curated, luxurious space. Fluted glass partitions serve as semi-opaque screens, utilizing the architectural principle of veiled transparency.

The primary space reflects a scheme of rich materiality and structured intimacy. Elegant light fixtures serve as sculptural interventions, where diffused and refracted light interact in a dynamic play of distorted forms, creating intrigue.

The corridor then leads to two more intimate rooms, located north of the dining area, which are separated by custom sliding wooden doors inset with hand-painted Asian artworks. The restaurant features several semi-private dining areas for guests, each with larger seating arrangements and elegant chandeliers.

Centrally, another dining space features a magnificent peacock portrait set against warm wooden walls, lively enhanced with its sculptural traits and bright, vivid colors. The majestic artwork is the key feature of Baan Busaba; it is embossed into the wall with intricately painted surfaces, representing an iconic identity of the Busaba chain of restaurants.

Stepping inside a more secluded area, three arched mirrored panels create an illusion of a larger space. This zone features a round table setup, perfect for a reunion of friends, a light-hearted celebration, or a cozy family dinner.

Throughout the entire space, lights radiate an inviting glow. Each of the chandeliers has a unique character, especially in the private dining spaces. A guest who enjoyed a fine-dining experience at the restaurant remarked, “The interplay of the chandelier’s light within the golden ceiling creates a specular reflection, casting shimmering tones that enhance the ambiance and adorn the place as if it were a gem—glamorous and bejeweled.”

Elements incorporated throughout the space were chosen for both their aesthetic and acoustic properties, helping to create an atmosphere suited for relaxing and listening to the curated playlist with a rhythmic groove of vintage jazz.

Several works by renowned painters decorate the walls, adding graphic counterpoints. Tasteful materials, historic detailing, beautiful motifs, the glow of chandeliers, along with soothing music, create a setting both contemplative and immersive.

If you look closely, there is immense attention to detail everywhere:
The hand-carved motifs.
The calm presence of aged bonsai.
The detailed historic showpieces.
The cultural characters and artworks.

“From the fluted glass that screens the light to the unique acoustic materials chosen to hold the soothing music, every element was selected to ensure the overall sensory experience was as refined as the cuisine,” concludes Hassan.

The interiors borrow many references from East Asian art and sculptural elements. Moreover, the authenticity in the culinary presentation and plating is an art in itself. Baan Busaba is not just a restaurant, but rather a well-curated gallery of decorous cultural influences.

The crowd describes Baan Busaba as “a refined escapism” from the stresses of everyday life. It is truly a tribute to art, culture, gastronomy, and a celebration of décor.
